We welcomed via ZOOM Kate Warren from Ambulance Vic, who gave a very valuable and informative talk on Strokes – what they are, how to recognise them and what we can do to minimise the risk of stroke.

4 out of 5  strokes are caused by blood clots

Since 2017, if you are within 20 km of Royal Melbourne Hospital you may have the mobile stroke unit dispatched. It is a full facility specialist stroke hospital on wheels.

50% of people can be treated within 90 minutes

 

Other signs are:weakness, numbness, dizziness, unexplained fall, problems with vision, sudden headache, difficulty swallowing

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Men between 55 and 85 are more likely than women to have a stroke, after this age women are more prone.

4 in 10 people who have had a stroke will have another within 10 years.

High blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, high cholesterol are all factors that increase stroke risk.
